Panoramic Associates is proud to be working with Alderman Knight School, a highly regarded special school in Gloucestershire, to recruit an experienced Deputy Headteacher. This is a key leadership opportunity for someone passionate about driving school improvement and delivering outstanding outcomes for young people with additional needs.
The Role
The role involves leading key areas of the school’s self-evaluation and improvement plan, driving team development to enhance outcomes for pupils, particularly in Teaching & Learning, subject leadership, and pastoral care.
Working closely with the Headteacher, the postholder will ensure high-quality education, support Pastoral Assistant Headteachers in maintaining standards, and contribute to strategic decision-making.
The role also includes overseeing staff development, managing school systems for efficiency, and fostering a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, the postholder will champion the school’s ethos, build strong relationships, and represent the school in external partnerships, making a lasting impact on both school development and pupil success.
Main Purpose
The role will involve:
- Leading key areas of the school’s self-evaluation and improvement plan.
- Driving school-wide team development to enhance outcomes for all pupils, focusing on Teaching & Learning, subject leadership, and pastoral care.
The role will also include working alongside the Headteacher to:
- Ensure exceptional education quality by collaborating with subject leaders.
- Support Pastoral Assistant Headteachers in maintaining high standards for PSD, Behaviour, and Attitudes.
- Contribute to strategic decision-making and school policies.
- Deputise for the Headteacher as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Vision
- Promote the school’s ethos of collaboration, accountability, and success.
- Lead by example, focusing on excellence in education.
- Build strong relationships within the school community.
- Engage with parents and external agencies to enhance student support.
- Stay informed of key educational developments and trends.
- Adapt policies to the school’s context and promote financial and political awareness.
- Seek professional development to meet both personal and school needs.
Staff and Pupil Support
- Assist in the daily management of the school, ensuring smooth operations.
- Hold staff accountable for pupil outcomes and promote high standards.
- Support smooth pupil transitions across key stages.
- Lead staff in ensuring outstanding teaching and learning.
- Foster a culture of best practice sharing.
- Oversee induction and performance management for staff.
- Plan and implement CPD to support staff development.
- Mentor early career and trainee teachers and assist with recruitment.
Systems and School Improvement
- Regularly review and improve school systems for efficiency.
- Ensure a safe, well-ordered environment focused on safeguarding and behaviour.
- Oversee appraisals and address any underperformance.
- Contribute to budget planning and ensure effective use of resources.
- Lead key projects and represent the school positively.
- Collaborate on curriculum planning and monitor assessment processes.
Developing the School’s Future
- Promote partnerships with other schools and organisations to enhance outcomes.
- Inspire and model innovative leadership practices.
- Advocate for the transformative power of education in young lives.

The Deputy Headteacher will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, and follow school policies and the staff code of conduct.

There will be a teaching commitment of approximately 0.2 FTE.
